Workshops and Classes

    Several times a year, PAL presents workshops with well-known painters and other artists. If you have suggestions for PAL-sponsored workshops, please contact our Workshop Chairperson Jeanne Crider (see contact info below.)

    August 26-28: Watercolor workshop with Joe Garcia.
    Workshop participants can expect to do a lot of painting in this three-day workshop because Mr. Garcia will cover a variety of topics and techniques. He'll do two demos each day and students should plan to complete two paintings daily - a total of six paintings.
    The workshop is primarily for watercolor painters, but some acrylics may also be allowed. Joe will focus his demos on subjects he's best known for: birds, wildlife and landscapes. Subjects will likely include local birds such as chickadees, Great Blue Heron and others common to Gig Harbor, as well as local architecture and boats from the Harbor's historic fishing fleet. He will provide reference materials, but participants can also use their own references if they prefer.
    Techniques will vary according to subject matter - from wet-into-wet washes as background in landscapes, to dry brush, sand paper and other texturing techniques in old fishing boats, for example.
    Because of the time factor, be prepared to "work small" - on quarter-sheets and eighth-sheets.
    Mr. Garcia likes to spend as much time as possible with each student. "In my workshops, I enjoy sitting down and conversing with the students, encouraging them and even painting with them," he says.
   He plans to cover more than just painting. He'll also give tips on preparing a portfolio, getting into galleries, pricing and selling your work. "I like to talk about being a professional artist and the business end of being a professional artist."
